Aspera Shares On Demand is the core infrastructure of the new Cinema Cloud cloud- Aspera-cinema-cloud1
based digital content delivery service for cinemas, video replicators and DI.

Based in Melbourne, Australia, Cinema Cloud handles video editing, authoring and encoding, as well as digital cinema distribution services through its parent Promo Scape. Cinema Cloud receives a quantity of video files every day from a network of global partners and distributes them to cinema customers across the Asia Pacific region. Using traditional mail services to distribute cinema content on hard drives created a logistical challenges and expense due to shipping delays, wear and tear on the drives, and the potential for lost shipments and rushed replacements.

To improve the service, the Cinema Cloud was developed as a cloud-based web application that enables high-speed, secure media file distribution over the wide area network. When considering the design of the system, Cinema Cloud ruled out traditional transfer techniques such as the native HTTP transport of the Amazon Web Services cloud environment due to inconsistent performance and inability to fully utilize available bandwidth.

After using Aspera client software based on the fasp system to receive content from partners in the US and the UK, Cinema Cloud tested and decided to deploy Aspera Shares On Demand to power their own service. The combined use of AWS’ cloud infrastructure and Aspera technology allows Cinema Cloud to achieve scale out of transfer capacity on demand, while maintaining complete security of content end-to-end. Aspera Shares also helped make user and file sharing management straightforward.

Tony Laughton, CEO of Cinema Cloud said that using Aspera as the basis of their transport has contributed to the feasibility and cost effectiveness of their cloud-based video hosting and distribution, and includes visibility into transfer activity. Using Aspera Shares, Cinema Cloud creates a unified system with which they can collect video content from geographically dispersed partners and distribute to cinemas in Australia and Asia. The content takes a few minutes to download from Cinema Cloud, and transfer of a 30GB Blu-ray to Taiwan or Germany takes only a few hours, eliminating the risk of shipping damages and customs clearance delays.  www.asperasoft.com
