Park Road Takes on DI and Stereo Post for ‘The Hobbit’ with Mistika

Production is now underway on Peter Jackson's adaptation of ‘The Hobbit’, and Park Road 
Post Production in New Zealand will handle stereo and DI work for the production and post
production of the film.

| The facility uses SGO Mistika DI, grading and finishing systems within its stereo 3D infrastructure, using the systems’ open and configurable architecture and real-time functions, to produce dailies and rushes for editorial, finishing and grading, and EDL conforms for screening. Their Mistika operator is Francisco Cubas. They purchased an additional four Mistika 4K systems earlier this year and now run six, including a license for the Weta Group, who will be working on visual effects for both films. | |

| Dave Hollingsworth, Head of Picture at Park Road said that, leading up to principal photography on The Hobbit, they needed to make sure they could turn around RED Epic high frame rate material in the timeframe and with the quality required. They worked with SGO and have been developing some of their own proprietary software to do this. Dave said, “The challenges Park Road faced were based around building a completely new pipeline for a new frame rate on new cameras. This said, the opportunity to build something that has never been done before was an opportunity we embraced and take pride in. We needed real time solutions for four times the amount of data of a standard 2D shoot so that we could still fully grade and QC every frame of the film and deliver to editorial within 24 hours of it being shot.
