Raffles College lifts the lid

Raffles College of Design and Commerce will showcase its wares to prospective students on
Saturday September 6. The North Sydney-based college has had an exciting year of change, with

two new Heads of Schools appointed, two new Masters degree programs accredited – in Design and
Commerce – and exceptional results from students and teachers.
The College’s Photography degree program is in the spotlight for Open Day this year. Visitors will
be able to:
• Watch photography students at work on a live studio fashion shoot with the theme, Fashion
Meets Hardware.
• Become characters in an interactive photo shoot. Photography students will recreate the
lighting and atmosphere of the film Sin City using members of the public in the shoot.
• See a mini-retrospective of student works based on scenes from the film Sin City.
• Watch multiple live shoots take place on the theme Youth Culture – from the 1950s to the
present day. Students and staff will demonstrate what is involved in preparing for and
carrying out a studio/location-based photographic shoot.
Photography Program Director, Sarah Smith, says “Our visitors will gain an insight into the variety
of challenging photographic briefs our students receive throughout their studies at RCDC. They will
also get to see a great selection of high standard work produced by our current students and they
will have a great time in process!”
Information sessions for parents and school leavers will be held and Raffles College students and
teachers will be on hand to answer questions, discuss the courses offered and the careers they lead
to.
Other displays for open day include the works of notable 2008 graduates Allison Berger (fashion
design), Oat Montien (graphic design), Ingrid Sjodahl and James Barnett (photography) among
others.
Allison Berger’s fashion design is currently on display at the Powerhouse Museum and she has been
accepted into the London College of Fashion to do her Master’s degree. Graphic designer Oat
Montien is the winner of the Kinokuniya Digital Art Prize and was invited to display 10 works at the
Emerging Designers Exhibition at Paddington Markets earlier this year. Photography graduate
Ingrid Sjodahl was named the winner of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography
